Bits and Bobs
The album cover for “Bits and Bobs” came about in the same way, complete and crystalline. To quote Virgina Woolf; “as one sees a landscape in a flash of lightning”. The projects I have the most fun with are the ones where I have the finished product in my head, and I then work towards realising it. There was some influence however, primarily an acrylic fish tank toilet seat I saw online at some point in the year before I made this artwork.
An additional inspiration was the album artwork for the live album “Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds - Live at Luther College”, from which I lifted the typography.
The resources required where minimal and cost effective. Assorted little plastic fish and real sea shells can be inexpensively obtained online, and the card stock cost me £5. Arranging them to my liking took some time, and I realised in editing that I had not used enough of the fish and shells, which meant I had to cut out and duplicate some of the pieces to fill out the image at the corners. The real work, however, was in adjusting the colours. The toy fish I bought had some strange, almost sickly colour schemes, and these I had to adjust manually to make the piece more cohesive. I was going for a late 90’s, early 2000s colour scheme with deep, vibrant shades.
