Buckling My Swash

For this phase of releases, I wanted to reflect the more colourful and vibrant electronic sounds and melodically driven approach I had to these songs. I was heavily influenced by the graphic design of musician John Foxx, and lifted both the typography and the use of a yellow scrap of paper in the background specifically from the single artwork of his song’s “Endlessly” and “Stars on Fire”.

Additionally, I was inspired by Foxx’s use of paintings, contrasting the classical, brushstroke textures with modern graphic design sensibilities. This single artwork combined the paintings “A Monkey” by George Stubbs, “Rooms by the Sea” by Edward Hopper, and “Blue Painting” by Vasily Kandinsky.

The title is a play on the term “Swashbuckling”, being a song told from the perspective of a pirate unfulfilled by his occupation.
