Death of the King - Stringman
I had worked with “Stringman” (Alex) once already, producing the poster for a gig we would play together while I was at university. The poster evidently stuck with him and, a couple of years later, he got in touch and asked if I would be willing to produce the album artwork for his next release. What initially started as a commission for just a front and rear cover, soon became much bigger. When making CDs, one has to consider interior inlays, the spine and disc art also.
Original Client Brief
The first and major concern I had when I first looked at the brief was, how am I going to do those squiggles down the side? I knew it had to be something regal and, as I am not someone who draws particularly well, I was limited in my options. I trudged through various stock image sites with search terms like “Rococo Ornamentation” and “Baroque Decoration” and assembled a large collection of elements. Then, I just stitched a handful together and processed to make them cohesive (and yellow). I toyed with a halftone lightning effect behind them, but the client knew what he wanted, and it wasn’t that.
